Itémedical on Infection prevention

What is an infection?

An infection is the body's response to a penetration of micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses. Infections not only have consequences for patients and incur additional costs for hospitals but can also damage a hospital's reputation. Anyone who undergoes treatment at a hospital can get an infection. According to the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment the chance of an infection is 4.2%. This concerns, among other things, infections of surgical wounds, blood poisoning due to catheter use or lung infection due to resuscitation. Although antibiotics are prescribed less frequently in the Netherlands compared to other countries, a lot of benefits can still be gained in this area. The fact is that infections result in a higher fatality rate, longer hospital stays, intensive care and hence higher care costs. Good infection prevention helps the institution avoid this.

What is infection prevention?

Infection prevention is the use of targeted measures that significantly decrease the number of infections. There are various ways of reducing the chance of an infection. There are procedures for patients, visitors and personnel for regular hand washing and rules for reusing materials. And the microbiologist has an increasingly important role when it comes to prescribing antibiotics and preventing an infection outbreak (outbreak control).

How can infection prevention be monitored and registered?

In the Netherlands it is the task of PREZIES (a part of the RIVM) to increase the quality of care in hospitals and hence decrease the occurrence of hospital infections and their risk factors. They do this by, among other things, implementing and maintaining standardised surveillance of hospital infections at hospitals. This way there is insight into the frequency of hospital infections at one's own institution.

MediScore Line Sepsis and POWI

With the MediScore modules Line Sepsis and POWI (Post-Operative Wound Infection) a hospital can record the data regarding central lines and post-operative wound infections according to the specifications set forth by PREZIES. This not only allows the hospital to receive feedback from PREZIES but it also learns about existing infections much earlier thanks to standard management reports and the MediScore analysis manager.

ICNet

The ICNet software helps with correct antibiotic use. Does the prescribed antibiotic fit with the protocol of the encountered organism? Is the antibiotic switched from a wide-spectrum to a narrow-spectrum antibiotic after the microbiological results came in? And does the microbiologist have a clear picture of the development of a resistance pattern to certain antibiotics? Is the antibiotic switched to another antibiotic with a lower MIC value? Microbiologists no longer lose time manually searching through files because all of the information is available digitally and is clear and well-organised.

Hygienic equipment

Spacelabs Healthcare's equipment was developed together with various hospital hygienists in order to ensure that the risk of infections when using this equipment is as low as possible. Some examples of such equipment are the smooth screens and seamless edges on the qube, Xhibit and XPREZZON monitors. Or a disposable ECG set and disposable cuffs for the monitors, 24-hour blood pressure meters and Holters.
